VPRO Tegenlicht Meet Up Nijmegen

VPRO Tegenlicht Meet Up Nijmegen

Tegenlicht Meet Up Nijmegen organizes meet ups around the VPRO documentary series Tegenlicht. This time we discuss the episode themed 'Travel is the new smoking'. Since the rise of mass tourism, people travel the world on a large scale and for little money. There seems to be no end to this development, as only more people want to travel, for low prices. But now that the coral reefs are disappearing, local residents have to move and even tourists are being attacked physically, a limit seems to have been reached.

At the meet up we are going discuss these developments. What possibilities are there for sustainable travel and which choices do you make yourself? Like every month we do this with various inspiring guests, such as professor of social geography Arnoud Lagendijk and Caroline de Greeff, founder of social enterprise Fair2.

Are you a world traveler, a sustainability apostle, a climate fighter or just curious? Join us!

Summer School presents: lecture on climate change

Summer School presents: lecture on climate change

During the (international) Summer School of Radboud University, Dr. Heleen de Coninck, Associate Professor at the Environmental Science department, provides a guest lecture! The subject of her lecture is climate change and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Evidence that human-made climate change is negatively affecting humans, economies and ecosystems is mounting. In the 2015 Paris Agreement, almost all countries have agreed to keep global temperature rise ‘well below 2°C’, and strive for limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Given that we are already approaching 1°C temperature rise, that emissions of greenhouse gases are still rising, and that great societal changes are needed to bend the curve, achieving the Paris goals will be challenging. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is working on a report, expected to come out in October, that will inform the UN negotiations about whether and how it’s possible to stay below 1.5°C and adapt to its consequences. Heleen de Coninck, one of the authors of the IPCC report, will give an update on the efforts needed to meet the Paris Agreement objectives and progress to date.
